HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY

This historic mansion reflects the turn of the century trend away from the forms and extravagances of the Victorian era in favor of more restrained classical and colonial revival forms. The knowledgeable use of architectural massing, and expert placement on the site, all combine to create a design of considerable quality.

The residence is one of the group of four on California and Franklin streets which announce Pacific Heights as an area of stately mansions as one approaches from downtown. The group consists of: the Wormser-Coleman house by Percy & Hamilton, 1876, 1895 (s.f. landmark # 53); the Lilienthal-Pratt house, architect unknown, 1876 (s.f. landmark #55); the Coleman house by Salfield and Kohlberg, 1895 (s.f. landmark #54); and the Bransten house by Herman Barth, 1904 (s.f. landmark #126). The families were related, which permitted the last house to be oriented toward a communal south garden.

The Brandenstein house was built in 1904 by the William Haases from plans by Herman Barth. In 1918 the Haases gave it as a wedding present to their daughter Florine on the occasion of her marriage to Edward Bransten (formerly Brandstein). William Haas was the first president of the wholesale firm of Haas Brothers, Inc. And, Edward Brandstein's brother Max founded MJB coffee.
